Thank you so much for this.
My mother had a copy of the Two Babylons and I remember the old Babylon has Fallen book. I'm glad Hisslop has been discredited.
the founder of (what is today called) jehovah's witnesses was a self-styled "pastor" charles taze russell.. his family was scottish presbyterian.
his mother must have inculcated all the fearsome lore of hell into her son at a very early age.
he often chalked on sidewalks warnings of hellfire for passers by as a child.. somewhere along the line he tangled with an atheist in a debate and was left torn to shreds by the beating he took.
Thank you so much for this.

it seems like they are not big on the big family holidays.
also, as a jw, what did you think people did on the 4th?
If the 4th is on a meeting night, almost all the JWs at my old Hall run from the KH to the park to watch the fireworks. Hall empties out in 10 minutes.
If it isn't a meeting night , they have get togethers and picnics like everyone else minus the patriotic theme.
This year they had their DC so I have no idea if anyone went. It was so nice to be in a crowd of people and not have to deal with being shunned on my holiday by someone who shouldn't be here.
i never did!
i thought it was in the long run, dumb to do, but i never felt a person should be expelled from the congregation for "greediness" just because a person buys lottery tickets or raffles.. (by the way, i enjoy moderate gambling.
keno is a favorite pastime)..
I only believeed it's a sin if you're gambling money that you can't afford to lose. Still feel that way I guess.
I live near a casino but have only gone there to see concerts and play the quarter slots.
Once in a while, I'll pick up a lottery ticket, won nine dollars on a dollar scratcher yesterday.
just curious .
any symbolism or meaning to your avatar choice?
mine is actually a gif .
Mine is a little Dumbo rat. They are very smart and lovable and cute too, kinda like me.
prompted by the thread about jwd v wts i wondered how many of you found jwd via the internet or friends/partners?
what were your first impressions?
i found this site through besty (husband) once my faith had crumbled after reading www.jwfacts.com.
I'm another one who found it through Freeminds. My husband was telling everyone that I was reading apostate sites. I wasn't at the time but heard about the UN scandal on another site and decided to research it. Led to Freeminds , led to JWD, have been happily reading ever since. My husband would be mortified to think he was the one who pushed me into it.
Started out only me reading but now my daughter and niece are regular lurkers here and have stopped attending meetings.
just wanted to say blessed beltane to all here!!.
beltane -- holiday details and history.

i'm new to the boards.
my partner has been posting here for a little while, so i figured i'd start posting too.
as for my status, i have faded and am now living life out of the closet.... well, sort of.
Hi Maleformed
I'm glad to meet you. I'm new-ish here too. I'm an ex-Elder's younger sister, not quite the same as having an Elder for a father, but close cause he's a lot older than me.
Looking forward to hearing ore about you.
it seems as though an age has passed from discovering this site seven years ago to where i am now.
just before we started studying the daniel's prophecy book, i went online to see if anyone had made a study bookmark with the dates and paragraphs on.
i "stumbled" across this site, way back in 2000. of course, like a good christian i pretty much determined that this site had gone apostate from the other jw sites, such.
My husband kept saying that I must be going on apostate sites because I stopped going to the meetings. Eventually I read about the UN scandal and did research which lead me to Freeminds. I figured I might as well go ahead and read iit if I'm being blamed for it anyway. I knew the truth when I saw it and eventually checked out the link to this site. I have learned so much here.

I really like these videos. Useful information sincerely presented. I have a couple people I would like to share these with but I will have to carefully pick the time.
Thank you so much for posting the links.
jws, and christians in genreral, are taught that god answers prayers of sincere believers.
on the other hand, there is a popular bumpersticker which reads "nothing fails like prayer".. what has been your experience in this regard?
did god answer your most heartfelt prayers, or were they ignored?.
Dave- The more I learn the more I believe this is true.
